Generally known today as the Old Harbor Light, a misnomer applied by a journalist in the 1930s, the range light gave only brief service, decommissioned and later replaced by a different rear range light after changes in the channel brought an end to its utility.
Old Harbor Light, Savannah GA
The Old Harbor Light was erected by the United States Lighthouse Board to guide ships into the Savannah Harbor and avoid the hulls of sunken ships in the channel. The British had sunk these ships in 1779 to prevent the French and American ships from entering Savannah during the Revolutionary War.

One of the most unique of Georgia's lighthouses is the Old Harbor Light in Savannah. It was built in 1858 on Fig Island, a stretch of land in the Savannah River, to guide ships into the harbor. It resembles an elaborate street lamp, made of cast iron imported from Europe. The Harbor Light was moved in 1869 and turned off during World War II.
